🎓 Google Is Dead to Me—Here’s What I Use Instead

When people think of AI for writers, tools like ChatGPT and Claude usually steal the spotlight. But what if I told you the AI tool I use more than any other—even for writing—isn’t a writing assistant at all?
Meet Perplexity — the AI-powered search engine that’s quickly become my go-to tool for research, troubleshooting, news tracking, and even product recommendations. In this issue, I’ll walk you through why it’s so powerful, how I use it daily, and how you can add it to your own AI toolkit.
🧠 What Is Perplexity?
Think of Perplexity as Google meets ChatGPT—only smarter, cleaner, and shockingly more helpful.
It combines real-time web search with AI summarization, surfacing results that are fact-based, source-cited, and instantly digestible. Unlike Google, which is often bloated with SEO content and ads, Perplexity delivers answers instead of just links.
⚡ Why I Use Perplexity More Than Google
I now use Perplexity 3x more than Google—here’s why:
✅ Fast, AI-enhanced answers for anything from historical facts to technical bugs.
✅ Minimal fluff — no scrolling through 12 ads and 5 Reddit reposts.
✅ Integrated source checking — click any citation to verify the facts.
✅ Deep Research mode — long-form summaries using sources like Reddit, YouTube, academic papers, and news articles.
✅ Model switching — choose between GPT-4, Claude, Gemini, and more depending on the task.
🔎 Use Cases That Changed My Workflow
1. Researching Anything—Fast
Want to know Stephen King’s writing routine? Need a summary of the latest AI model updates? Just ask. Perplexity provides clean, structured answers with citations—plus the option to go deeper with follow-up questions or full research threads.
2. Neutral News Aggregation
Tired of political bias in the news? Perplexity’s Discover tab aggregates news from across the political spectrum, surfacing the facts without the spin. Bonus: you can tailor it to your interests like tech, science, or arts.
3. Technical Troubleshooting
Whether I’m building AI automations or jailbreaking retro consoles, I turn to Perplexity when Google fails me. It often gives me the right answer on the first try, even for super-niche problems.
4. Spaces for Custom Assistants
Spaces in Perplexity let you build custom assistants. I’ve built one for historical fiction research, another for health insights (with data uploaded), and a few others for hobbyist deep dives.
🧪 Cool Features You Should Know About
🎯 Source Filtering: Choose between Web, Academic, or Social sources (Reddit, YouTube).
🧾 Attach Files: Upload PDFs or images to analyze or query directly.
📱 Voice Mode (Mobile Only): Ask questions with your voice and get spoken responses—ideal for hands-free research.
📝 Pages: Automatically generate article-style writeups from prompts. Think of it as a personal AI-powered Wikipedia builder.
🛍️ Bonus: Smarter Product Research
Forget paid-for listicles. I now use Perplexity to gauge true public sentiment about products using Reddit and YouTube comments. It helps me see what real people actually think, rather than what SEO-driven content wants me to see.
💸 Worth the $20/Month?
In short: yes. The free plan is generous, but the Pro Plan unlocks higher usage limits and faster responses. I personally get more value from Perplexity’s $20 plan than I do from GPT-4 or Claude's subscriptions.
💬 Final Thoughts
Perplexity might not be as flashy as GPT or as "human-like" as Claude—but for real-world utility, it’s indispensable. If you’re a writer, researcher, developer, or just a curious human, give it a try. It might just become your most-used AI tool too.
