AI TUTORIAL
A Quick, Practical Guide to Hermeneutic Prompting
What is Hermeneutic Prompting?
It means using your AI not just to generate a text, but to interpret, question, and refine it iteratively. You treat its output like a text to be analysed and improved.

Navdeep Singh Gill
Step-by-Step Workflow (using your task: “Create a product launch email for a new AI note-taking app for busy professionals.”)
1/ Frame the task & process
“You are my hermeneutic assistant. We’ll draft, interpret, probe assumptions, explore perspectives, refine, then finalise.
Task: Create a product launch email for [details].”
2/ Generate the initial draft
Ask: “Produce a first version of the email.”
3/ Ask for the AI’s interpretation
Ask: “Explain how you understood the task: audience, tone, product, what you included/excluded and why.”
4/ Share your feedback on its interpretation
You write: “Here’s what you got right/what you missed. Adjust: audience is X, tone should be Y, goal is Z.”
Ask it to summarise your refined intent in bullet-points.
5/ Surface assumptions & alternate perspectives
Ask: “List assumptions you made, perspectives you didn’t include, any issues or blind-spots.”
Then: “Produce 2-3 brief versions of the email from different perspectives (e.g., ‘time-starved consultant’, ‘privacy-focused user’).”
6/ Synthesize a refined spec
Ask: “Based on our work, write a spec: audience, tone, key messages, constraints. Ask me any final clarifications.”
7/ Generate the final version + log
Ask: “Write the final email per the spec. Then give a short log showing how your understanding changed, which assumptions we fixed, which perspectives we added, and how final differs from first draft.”
Why it works
Makes the AI’s assumptions visible and refinable.
Explores different user-views rather than one-size-fits-all.
Aligns the final output more closely with your intent and context.
