How to Use Claude Code Offline for Free with Ollama

Run Claude Code with a local open source model using Ollama so you can work offline and avoid API usage costs. This setup removes per-use fees, but performance and capability will depend on your hardware.

1. Go to https://ollama.com and download Ollama for your operating system.

2. Install Ollama and open it once to confirm it runs correctly.

3. Open the Ollama website and review the recommended models for Claude Code.

4. Choose Quen 3 coder or GLM 4.7 as your model.

5. Select a model size your machine can handle, such as the 30B version. Avoid very large models like 480B unless you have very high VRAM.

6. Copy the exact model name from the Ollama model page.

7. Open your terminal and run ollama pull MODEL_NAME, replacing MODEL_NAME with what you copied.

8. Wait for the model to download fully to your local machine.

9. Download and install Claude Code from the official Claude download page.

10. Log in to your Claude account when prompted to complete setup.

11. Configure Claude Code to use Ollama by following the Ollama Claude integration guide or using ollama launch to connect Claude Code to your local model.

12. Select your downloaded model when prompted and confirm Claude Code launches showing that model name.

13. Test it by asking a simple question like “What is 3 + 3?” and confirm it responds locally.
